Artist: Catholic Guilt EP: This Is What Honesty Sounds Like Label: Wiretap Records Release Date: 08/28/2020

Melbourne’s Catholic Guilt are forging their own creative path with the release of their new EP, This Is What Honesty Sounds Like, released on Wiretap Records. The Australian quintet defyingly bends genres with their unique infusion of alternative rock, punk, and folk. The band’s raw compositions stand out with strong craftsmanship and captivating storytelling.

The dynamic “A Boutique Affair” kicks everything off with an energetic pop-punk track that narrates the importance of valuing the significant relationships in your life.

“A boutique affair is what they’ll call it. // A boutique affair for ‘what’s his name’? // He threw a party back in high school. // But if I try, just can’t put a face to the name, or a name to the face.”

“Song of the Renter” takes a playful jab at social issues surrounding the effects of neighborhood gentrification and the inflow of hipsters that is associated with it. “Life in Three Part Harmony” is a melodic love song filled with raw emotional vocals from frontman Brenton Harris as he openly wears his heart on his sleeve.

“The Awful Truth” strikes a brutal blow with its unapologetic commentary about the destruction of innocence; never backing down from calling out the ones in religious authority roles who have inflicted this severe damage, abusing and misusing their power and breaking the trust of the individuals who looked to them for guidance. “Nothing…” concludes the EP on an elegant note with an emotional pouring out. This empowering track expresses the hardships of grief and the memory of a loved one who passed away, honoring their life legacy and the lessons learned throughout their lifetime.

This EP features a variety of catchy hooks and moments of emotional vulnerability, providing the perspective of five skilled musicians who acknowledge the difficult challenges of growing up and adjusting to the realities of adulthood. Catholic Guilt has delivered a brilliant compilation of songs that truly fulfill the implication of its title, as the music notes continuously spill out the speakers with resounding and refreshing honesty.
